A transponder is a small device that you place on the windshield that receives and sends signals. For toll roads, transponders are linked to NC Quick Pass accounts, allowing customers to pay electronically via their online account without having to stop and pay at a toll booth.

North Carolina tolls are all electronic. This means that, instead of traditional toll booths, you’ll see toll gantries that record your vehicle as you travel and then invoice you appropriately.

If you have a transponder through NC Quick Pass, when you pass under a toll gantry on a North Carolina toll road, we will automatically deduct the amount from the prepaid balance on the associated NC Quick Pass account.

Your NC Quick Pass transponder must be installed properly on your vehicle for it to work. You can also find the instructions on our Transponder Options page.

Visit our Transponder Options page for more information on transponder options.

Visit our Where NC Quick Pass Works page to find out where your transponder works.

You need one transponder for every vehicle on the account.

North Carolina accepts select partner agency transponders on North Carolina toll roads. These partner agencies include E-PASS, E-ZPass, I-PASS, Peach Pass, and SunPass.

Prior to traveling on North Carolina toll roads, make sure your vehicle license plate is registered on your partner agency account so that you are charged properly. Partner agency customers are encouraged to check with their toll agency’s customer service for any account requirements.

The NC Quick Pass Sticker transponder is not transferable to other vehicles. Each vehicle associated with an account requires its own transponder. You will need to deactivate the transponder on your account and request a new one.

If you have the NC Quick Pass Flex transponder, you must update the license plate associated with that transponder to transfer it to a new vehicle. You can update the license plate associated with your transponder by logging in to your account.
